MISS LATINA WORLD and TEEN LATINA WORLD are recognized as the stellar pageants for today's Latin woman. The prizes, the resources and the media attention garnered by the productions is unparalleled.
Model Dawn Rochelle Warner founded the pageants while working with new models in the modeling agency she owned. When trying to encourage some of the latina models to enter in the Miss America or Miss USA type pageants she was met with resistance. "Latinas never win those pageants." she was told by the young women. She put her extensive pageant industry contacts to work to find a pageant geared towards Latinas. "We searched everywhere, and I was surprised to learn that at that time there were no pageants for Latinas in the US." says Dawn, "So I started one." The Miss Latina USA pageant was grass-roots in the beginning, mainly consisting of local Miss Texas contestants. But It wasn't long before Dawn's professionally produced Miss Latina USA Pageant was getting national attention. In 1998 the pageant reached national status and Dawn decided to add a sister pageant and began producing Teen Latina USA. That same year marked the first television broadcast of Miss Latina USA. In 2001, after two years of preparation, her dream of a truly international pageant came true with the launch of the Miss Latina World Pageant.
In 2003 the Miss Latina USA Pageant celebrated 10 years of beauty. Throughout those 10 years the pageant has been ever-evolving. "I'm always looking for new ways to keep the pageant fresh and fun." says Dawn. Some of the updates included opening the pageant to married women and single mothers and producing reality style television broadcasts.
The Miss Latina World Organization is headquartered in Dallas, Texas, with representatives worldwide. It is staffed by experts in fields ranging from marketing and TV production to modeling and casting providing a range of services for women.
The Miss Latina World Pageant provides the opportunities - the mentoring, career training, resources and life experiences - for Latinas to be enriched and advance their community - and self.
The pageant system and the young women who participate are involved with charitable causes including the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, The United Way and several mentoring programs.
The pageants begin on the local level where a network of talent scouts and preliminary directors, hold auditions and preliminary pageants to qualify young women for the international Miss Latina World and Teen Latina World pageants held each summer. The pageant headquarters receives around 20 applications each day from young women hoping to enter into the system. Preliminary pageants are held in countries with the winner continuing on to Miss Latina World.
